Bananakeet Café - Carrot Bay

Boasting one of the island's most scenic views and amongst the top 3 or 4 best places to observe incredible sunsets on Tortola, the Bananakeet Café is a favourite to both visitors and locals alike.

The restaurant is owned and operated by the Heritage Inn, directly behind the restaurant. I should probably mention that Manager Chris Washburn and her partner Bonkey Callwood, also own the B-Line Bar on Little Jost Van Dyke.

I don't get the chance to get out that much these days, but I've always enjoyed this restaurant and its Caribbean fusion cuisine. It offers a casual and relaxed atmosphere, incomparable views, good food and reasonable prices.

Don't be in a rush though. Service can get bogged down on a busy night. Ask your server what your table number is and if getting drinks should become a problem, just go to the bar, order your drinks and give the barman your table number.

They host live entertainment Wednesday, Friday and Sunday nights in high season but Sunday night only in low season.

The restaurant caters to fish and meat eaters almost exclusively, but they do offer a vegan pasta on their menu. Entrées include shrimp, pork, chicken, tuna, lamb, ribs, steak and several pasta dishes. I particularly enjoy their ribs and the coconut rum shrimp are delicious.

I am told their mixed drinks are excellent but that their house specialty, "The Bananakeet Bomber" is particularly good. I asked a tourist who was just finishing his first one what he thought of the drink and he gave it a very enthusiastic two thumbs up! It is made with fresh banana, banana liqueur, Irish Cream, Coconut Cream, Vodka and is topped with Amaretto.
