Built on the site of an 18th century sugar mill, the 1748 Restaurant is part of Tortola's Long Bay Beach Resort and it's a lovely place to enjoy a meal, admire the views of the island's longest beach and delight in the sea breeze. You do not have to be a resort guest to be welcome at the restaurant.
Long Bay is not a suitable anchorage, so if planning to visit, you should pick up a mooring in
Soper's Hole and taxi over.
On Friday night, the resort celebrates by offering up International cuisine with a Caribbean flavour.
The set menu includes soup, a lovely fresh salad, your choice of a whole red snapper with creole sauce or BBQ baby back ribs as your entrée with a traditional Tortola Tart for dessert. The tart is a marvelous blend of coconut, guava berries and pineapple.
For Sunday brunch, the hotel staff lay on quite a spread, sometimes with entertainment to enhance your experience. There's something for everyone including vegetarians, vegans and the rest of us meat eaters.
The resort Manager (Mr. Lyndon Nicholas) has assured me that bareboat charter groups are welcome to make full use of the restaurant and bar. After your meal, you are welcome to stay a while and enjoy the beach as well as the resort's free beach chairs.
It's a lovely spot and there's public parking available right beside the bar and gift shop. The bar is open all day until closing at 10:00 or 11:00 pm.
Parts of
Long Bay Beach are very sunny while others offer some much welcome shade. You'll find both readily available directly in front of the restaurant. It's a wonderful place for boogie boarding!
