Dragonfly
Lagoon 42 | Catamaran - 2017
Name: Dragonfly | Air Conditioned
I will go out on a limb and make a prediction that the Lagoon 42 will quickly become as popular as the 380, 440 and 450 in the BVI bareboat charter market. It is a wonderful design, both inside and out. Sure, the model has a few niggling little things that could be done a little better ... but once addressed, I don't think there are (currently) any comparable catamarans (in the same size and price range) that sail quite as well.
As has been the company's direction in recent years, the 42 sports the iconic centered mast with high aspect ratio, square-topped mainsail and a self-tacking headsail for a more balanced and stable sailing platform. This combination has greatly reduced pitching and made sail handling a breeze. In fact, this yacht is quite easy to single-hand, making her a perfect yacht for groups of 6 or 7 or for a captain only charter for a group of 4 or 5. Of course, you may also use the convertible saloon table if you'd like to add another one or two guests.
The foredeck offers a large trampoline area as well as two lounge pads for soaking up that Caribbean sunshine. The wide side decks feature Lagoon's recessed hatches ... but gone are the traditional handrails which I personally miss. You will find a finger grip under the coach roof instead.
The helm is suitable for one or two people and is nicely appointed, having all winches and lines within easy reach. At just 5'2", I am vertically challenged and cannot see the forward bows, but in a pinch, if I stand on tippy toes and lean forward over the wheel I can just glimpse the tips of the bows, so would definitely need a spotter when docking. The view to aft is great, though tall folks may have to duck a bit to see under the coach roof. The hard bimini has a viewing port for the mainsail as well as a sliding port for access to the coach roof.
There are three steps leading up to the coach roof if you need to check the mast, boom or if you want to take advantage of our beautiful weather, and put the full-length sun pads to good use. Your solar panels can also be found up there.
The huge, open sugar scoops provide a wonderful boarding platform with the starboard side featuring your swim ladder, which you'll find is quite easy to deploy. The aft cockpit is very roomy and offers a good deal of lounge space as well as outdoor dining, with lots of headroom under the rigid bimini with recessed LED lighting. A handy cockpit fridge is an ideal spot to keep your cold drinks so folks won't be traipsing in and out of the galley all day long.
A seamless entry from your cockpit to the main saloon helps integrate the two main social areas of the yacht. The cook will never be kept out of the loop because the well-equipped galley adjoins the cockpit. This particular yacht boasts two under counter refrigerators with a total of 8 cubic feet of interior space, a separate freezer, 3 burner stove, oven, microwave, pots, pans, utensils, glassware, etc.
The Italian designed interior of this air-conditioned catamaran is particularly airy, bright and cleanly modern throughout. The spacious main saloon features the vertical wrap around windows Lagoon yachts are famous for. Two opening hatches located in the center of the forward windows provide flow through ventilation while sitting at anchor. It should be noted that the air conditioning unit has individual controls for each cabin as well as the main saloon.
A fully equipped navigation station and chart table with B&G instrumentation are located at the end of the L-shaped settee that easily seats 6 for indoor dining.
The starboard side owner's suite boasts a queen sized, walk-around island berth with copious amounts of natural light provided by 2 fixed ports and 2 opening ports behind and beside the bed as well as an opening hatch above. You'll find this cabin provides ample drawer, closet, and storage space for two, as well as a dressing room settee, a private desk with soft close lid, book shelves, and a nifty sliding door for privacy. A spacious ensuite head with separate shower finishes off this lovely cabin very nicely.
To port are two additional guest cabins. The aft cabin has another queen sized, island berth with its own ensuite head and separate shower while the forward cabin is slightly smaller and the berth has walk-around access on one side. This cabin has a smaller head with shower combination. There is also an opening hatch access to the forepeak berth from the forward cabin. This berth is suitable for a child, teen or small adult but cannot be assigned to a hired captain.
I really like this yacht. I could do without the mast step in the middle of the main saloon ... but it's a small price to pay for the improvement to the boat's handling and responsiveness. The Lagoon 42 is guaranteed to be a winner in the BVI bareboat scene for a long time to come!
