Lagoon 42 | Catamaran - 2018

Name: Arabella | Air Conditioned

This fabulous mid-sized catamaran is priced fairly and is ideal for a group of 8 or 9 looking to sail the BVI. Single-handed sailing is no problem at all aboard this stunning yacht with 377 square foot, self-tacking jib, well-balanced rig, electric mainsail winch with lazy jacks and stack pack.

While there is a definite family resemblance, the 42 has a more curvaceous appearance than other models, yet she maintains that distinctly angular "Lagoon" look. The new aerodynamic perspective is attributed to Patrick Le Quement, a former French car designer, and the folks at VPLP design, known worldwide for their ocean racing multihulls.

In addition to the new look, the Lagoon 42 has been entirely redesigned from stem to stern. Weighing in at just over 26,000 pounds, the combination of her injection-molded hull, centered rig, short boom, high aspect ratio (square topped) sail and self-tacking jib she nips along even in the lightest winds ... and is very easy to single-hand.

While I appreciate the improved sail handling and responsiveness that has been accomplished by situating the mast to center, I really find the mast step in the middle of the main saloon somewhat annoying ... though it really isn't a huge inconvenience. It just seems odd.

I love the wide side decks and flush mounted deck hatches provided on all Lagoon models but I wish they had added a handrail on the coach roof. Instead, you'll find a rather awkward finger hold under the coach roof. The roof looks lovely and sleek without a visible handrail, but I personally find the (upside down) grip rather awkward.

The gull-wing designed bridge deck helps to reduce drag and noise caused by water slapping under the belly of the yacht when underway in lumpy seas. I really like this feature, as I find the pounding and resulting "shudder" that tends to telegraph throughout other catamarans to be rather unsettling.

I am admittedly short at only 5'2 and a bit, so I often have trouble seeing the bows on various catamaran models from the helm. If I stand on tippy toes and lean forward over the wheel, I can see the tip of each forward pontoon, and can easily see the stern on both sides. Others (taller than myself) will have to duck to see the starboard aft pontoon. The raised helm presents a crisp and clean design with all lines, winches, and controls within easy reach ... even for me. The rigid helm bimini has a sail viewing port (nice touch) as well as a see-through sliding hatch, providing easy access up three steps to the coach roof and the always popular sun pads.

The cockpit is comfortable, spacious, very well-shaded and offers a good amount of seating and lounge space with outdoor dining. You won't find any awkward bulkheads to climb over, as the single level deck extends all the way from the top of the extra large sugar scoops to the forward window in the main saloon. When the sliding glass door and window are open, you'll enjoy each of the integrated indoor/outdoor entertainment, cooking and lounging spaces.

The interior Is lovely and bright, with Lagoon's signature vertical wrap around windows providing excellent visibility in the main saloon, and two opening hatches in the forward windows providing additional flow-through ventilation. The well-designed roof overhang helps to keep the saloon cool, even with the generator and air conditioning turned off.

A very workable U-shaped galley is located to starboard and is equipped with a three-burner stove, oven, microwave, single stainless steel sink and the necessary pots and pans, utensils, glasses, etc.

To port of the galley is a counter with front opening fridge, top opening freezer and storage space below. Forward and to port is the L-shaped settee and dining/lounge area. At the end of the settee is the fully equipped navigation station facing outboard to starboard.

If you are over 6'4" tall, you will have to duck a little in the cabins, however, you won't spend that much time upright in there anyway ... so it shouldn't be that much of an inconvenience. Consider the reduced height an important sacrifice for improved sailing performance due to reduced weight and windage. The berths are still extra long, so tall folks won't have their feet dangling over the end of the berth.

The two aft cabins are very airy, have an abundance of natural light, great storage space, and each has walk-around, island berths and an ensuite head with separate shower stalls. The two forward cabins each have a slightly smaller berth with access from one side and an ensuite head with shower combo.

This is a surprisingly spacious yacht that belies her 42' length. Yes, the companionways between the forward and aft cabins are a little narrow, but the space gained in the main saloon, as a result, is definitely worth the tradeoff.
