Bareboats BVI - Bareboat Sailing and Motor Yacht Charters

Anegada Information
.... and more about the British Virgin Islands:

Anegada spacer Map | Pictures & Information | Beaches

Origin of Name:

Spanish for "Drowned Island".

Location:

Approximately 10 miles north east of Virgin Gorda.

Description:

The only coral island in the BVI and unlike her sister islands, Anegada is virtually flat. Salt ponds are a dominant feature with a growing flock of resident flamingos. There is a nearly continuous beach running for miles around the whole island. Home to the Anegada Rock Iguana and several endemic species of plants found only on this island. Some would consider this a true "desert island"! If looking for rest, relaxation and solitude without a lot of hubbub, look no further!

A large majority of the fish and lobster served in local BVI restaurants are caught at or near the horseshoe reef. The island is also well know for its great bone fishing!

You will not find any large, all inclusive resorts or high rise hotels here. There are a handful of small, family operated hotels or Inns and several private homes available for villa rentals.

Population in 2006:

200 (estimate only - see notation below)

Main Town or Village:

The Settlement - (mainly a fishing village)

Maximum elevation:

28' above sea level

Land Mass:

Approximately 15 square miles

Main industries:

Tourism and fishing

Notable Beaches:

Cow Wreck Beach, Loblolly Bay Beach ... but basically anywhere you go, you are at or near "the beach"!

Overnight Anchorages:

Setting Point (Bender's Bay)

National Parks:

None (though one might argue that Flamingo Pond should be a national park!)

Major Annual Events:

Early March - Dark & Stormy Sailing Race
Late November to Early December - Lobster Fest

Notable Features:

Great beaches, several large salt ponds, the Anegada Reef, Auguste George Airport (NGD)

Marinas:

None yet!

Transportation:

Anegada can be reached by air from Tortola. Several companies fly into Anegada and private charters may be arranged.

Smith's Ferry runs regularly scheduled trips every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Taxis and car rentals can be arranged through the Anegada Reef Hotel (284) 495-8002, DW Jeep Rentals (284) 495-9677 or JD's Taxi Service (284) 443-6091.

Population figures are estimates supplied by the BVI Development Planning Unit from a census taken in 2001. A new census was taken in 2010, but those figures have not yet been released.
