Cool Change
Lagoon 450 | Catamaran - 2016
Name: Cool Change | Air Conditioned
"Pure madness"; I thought when I heard that Lagoon Yachts, a division of the Beneteau Group were planning to scrap the most commercially successful catamaran model ever built (Lagoon 440) ... and were going to redevelop it from the ground up.
The second I stepped aboard the newly launched Lagoon 450, all my concerns melted away. It became clear that VLVP (in conjunction with interior designers - Nauta Design) had produced yet another huge success. She's bigger, better and even more popular than her predecessor.
This 3 cabin owners version is nothing short of stunning. Her straight forward and practical layout is complemented by clean lines, sensible use of space and an open, airy feel.
The aft cockpit centers around the outdoor dining table to port that melds seamlessly with your galley and main saloon to create one large indoor-outdoor space, ideal for socializing and relaxation. The main saloon is absolutely lovely. A large L-shaped settee with table dominate and is enhanced by a backdrop of windows that wrap around all three sides of the saloon. Your forward facing navigation station is adjacent to the settee on the port side.
You'll appreciated her well equipped, u-shaped galley providing the cook with an easy to manage prep area and all the basics necessary to prepare just about anything your heart desires. See the equipment list below. The sliding glass pass through window is directly in front of the aft cockpit dining area, ensuring that your designated cook always remains part of the conversation.
The cheerfully appointed and very comfortable port side guest cabins offer up queen sized berths with en-suite heads and separate shower stall. Lots of natural light and flow through ventilation are supplied by several fixed portlights and opening hatches.
The star of the show aboard this catamaran is the owner's suite with queen sized, walk around berth, a two seater settee, desk, his and hers hanging closest, lots of storage space and a large private head with separate shower. Not too shabby!
Topsides, it doesn't get much better. Very wide, non-skid decks provide a safe and stable platform for young and old alike. Access to the flybridge is quick and easy from all positions on deck or from the cockpit. The socially friendly helm provides your skipper with excellent 360 degree visibility and loads of space for friends and family to enjoy the view or sunbathe on the mats provide directly in front of the helm.
The bow with large trampoline and recessed forward cockpit provide yet another great area to congregate and enjoy the fresh sea breeze and perhaps a lovely Caribbean sunset while sipping your favourite cocktail.
If I have any complaints about the Lagoon 450, it would have to be the square cornered tables and counters. They are boat bites waiting to happen. They look nice but are not practical on a boat. As long as you are aware of them, you will know to avoid them when the yacht is underway. All in all though the designers have done an outstanding job. Kudos to all involved!
Note: ASA Sailing lessons (level 114) are available aboard this yacht. Candidates must already possess ASA level 104 bareboat certification.
