Jeanneau SO 439 - 2014
Sailboat Name: Baxter
This spunky 3 cabin yacht boasts a voluminous interior that belies her actual size. The intelligent use of space, rich interior finishes and abundance of natural light have been done so well that she rivals almost any 46 footer of yesteryear.
The Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 439 is not just another bareboat, she is a wonderfully nimble and versatile family cruiser. I like it a lot!
As you enter the main saloon, the sense of spaciousness achieved by the design team becomes immediately evident. I suppose it is the simplicity of the interior design that I like so much. She is crisp, clean, airy and functional.
To starboard of the companionway is the very workable L-shaped galley with gimballed 2 burner stove and oven, double stainless steel sink and a reasonably sized top loading fridge/freezer that also has a front opening access door. There is storage for pots and pans below the oven, more storage below the sink, three soft close drawers to port of the sink and several storage compartments above the countertop.
The main saloon features a lovely big U-shaped, white leather lounge and dining table. The table folds in half lengthwise, providing a huge passageway through the saloon making it an ideal spot to hang out, socialize or enjoy some fabulous Caribbean cocktails while your chef prepares a tasty meal.
It is important to note that the use of natural light throughout this yacht is probably what makes it so invitingly comfortable. Deck level windows run nearly the full length of the main salon and galley. That coupled with two additional and quite long fixed portlights in the hull sides and two large opening hatches overhead, ensure that the living space is awash in natural light. For those of us who dread living the life of a gopher when we step aboard a monohull, this is a very welcome attribute.
Aside from her elegantly understated finishes and sensible layout, you'll come to appreciate the strategically placed overhead hand holds, fiddles and bevelled corners on all furniture as well. Even in heavy seas, you'll have no problem negotiating your way through the interior.
The saloon table, when folded in half, drops down to seat height and transforms into another double berth should you need the additional sleeping space. Opposite the dinette, is another smaller lounge as well as your well equipped navigation station with chart table that doubles as a computer desk should you opt to rent Wi-Fi.
The two generously sized aft cabins share the aft head with shower and offer up a large hanging locker and storage in each. The forward owner's suite is lovely and bright, and provides a good sized hanging locker, a desk that doubles as a vanity and an en-suite head with shower.
Topsides, the broad cockpit with nice high seat backs, affords sufficient room for lounging and outdoor dining. She's fully loaded with full bimini and dodger, low profile, high density foam cushions covered in Sunbrella fabric and line bags to keep the cockpit free of any tripping hazards. The center console provides a traditional drop leaf table with storage and drink holders. The GPS chartplotter is mounted on the aft end of the console table, making it easily visible from either helm.
The dual helm features a Harken, 2 speed electric winch, with both the main and genoa sheets fed back to the helm, making short handed sailing quite an easy task.
Designed by the distinguished naval architect, Philippe Briand, the Sun Odyssey 439 presents a lovely sleek profile, sports flush mounted hatches, inboard shrouds, clean deck lines free of any intrusive hardware, and you can be assured that she sails very efficiently, handles easily and is a lot quicker than you might think.
Note: ASA Sailing lessons (levels 101, 103 and 104) are available aboard this yacht. Candidates must be at least 12 years of age or over to acquire bareboat certification.
