Mahe 36 Evolution | Catamaran - 2014
Based in Tortola, this little catamaran is absolutely marvelous and is almost never left sitting at the dock. Having undergone several serious changes, additions and upgrades since the first model was introduced in 2006, she is certainly one of the most popular yachts in the fleet.
Boasting 2, well appointed and equal sized master suites, this is the ideal sailboat for two couples who enjoy their space and privacy. Each has a tapered queen berth, hanging locker, respectable storage space and a very large head with vanity and shower.
The main salon is open and spacious, with an aft facing, leatherette dinette that seats 4 to 6. Under the seats you'll find storage space. Extra storage space always comes in handy!
Two large opening hatches are located on either side of the mast enclosure to provide flow through ventilation, while the rest of the salon is surrounded by fixed portlights that yield lots of natural light.
The galley has undergone several design changes, the most important of which is the addition of a separate freezer. That's a major upgrade from the previous model! The fridge is now located under the navigation station, just inside the sliding glass door to the cockpit and the freezer is where the fridge used to be, beside the dinette. Also added is some much needed counter and storage space as well as a double sink. All in all, the galley is greatly improved and very workable!
The cockpit remains mostly unchanged, with two major exceptions. She now has a stylized rigid bimini that morphs into a two person helm sea on the starboard side ... and there is no traveler on the coaming anymore. The traveler is mounted on the cockpit roof, out of the way of fingers and toes. Much safer, tidier and a whole lot smarter!
Single handed sailing is what the evolution is all about. To this end, all lines and controls are at the skipper's fingertips. Her under hull has been redesigned to improve upon performance and handling capabilities, while the helm was substantially raised to provide 360 degree visibility. I am just under 5'3 and am able to see very well, provided I stand up. From a seated position, I could still see very well, but could not see the bow.
The Mahe 36 is probably amongst the top 3 to 5 most popular catamarans available for charter in the BVI. Be sure to make your reservation 8 to 10 months in advance, year 'round and a year in advance over any holiday period! There are never enough small cats to go around!
