Beneteau Oceanis 55 - 2013
Sailboat Name: No Regrets | Air Conditioned
Wow, what a yacht! The only way to accurately describe the sleek, low profile and angular features of this 55 foot sailboat is "stunning"! It appears that the look and efficiency of monohull sailing in the 21st century has just been kicked up a notch or three. Kudos to both Berret Racoupeau (naval architects) and Interior designers, Nauta Design!
The Beneteau Oceanis 41' and 45' models preceded the 55'. In order to accommodate the extraordinarily wide beam running all the way aft, the designers moved the mast aft and added a hard chine. Twin rudders were also added to provide stability under sail on the 55' model.
The signature arch has become standard equipment on the new Beneteau "Oceanis" and "Sense" ranges. Introduced in 2011, the main point of the arch is to provide much more space in the cockpit by providing an "out-of-the-way" anchor point for the mainsheet blocks and the perfect support for a dodger. The sheets then run forward through an organizer on the boom and then forward to the mast. This ingenious line arrangement combined with a rigid boom vang made the traveler redundant. The net result is really very impressive.
The cockpit is indeed very spacious. The primary winches are located inboard of each helm so the skipper can easily drive and trim at the same time. The mainsheet, halyard, downhaul etc. are handled by the self-tailing winches located on the cockpit coaming, just forward of each helm. Add to all this, self tacking hardware for your genoa ... and Bob's your uncle! They couldn't have made this yacht more user friendly.
I love the extra large companionway, the 45 degree stairs, the electric, drop down swim platform, the coach roof lounge pads on either side of the companionway and the super sized seating arrangement. Absolutely lovely!
Below decks, her 16'3" beam becomes very evident. The amount of space is absolutely mind blowing! However, when underway in heavy seas or if healing, the massive dancehall at the base of the companionway to the main salon can become a rather daunting area to negotiate for any height challenged guests (who cannot reach the handrails) and even seasoned sailors alike. Best to ask the captain to fall off the wind while you negotiate your intended path. Slowing down now and again is a small price to pay for all that room. Besides, this yacht is no slouch, she is really fast and you can easily make up the time if you are in a rush!
The interior spaces in this gorgeous sailboat are positively awash in light! There are no less than 8 large portlights in the hull alone, 3 flush mounted, opening deck hatches forward, and although I didn't count them, there are several more portlights, skylights and hatches throughout the boat.
Should you wish to hire a captain, no problem! There is an air conditioned crew cabin forward (with manual head, sink with hand held shower and shower curtain) just for this purpose. Entrance to the crew cabin is through a deck hatch, so nobody aboard will be disturbed.
There is too much to say about the Oceanis 55 and this article is already too long, so I will let the photos speak for themselves. Come sailing in the incomparable British Virgin Islands in comfort and truly grand style aboard this absolutely gorgeous yacht!
Note: ASA Sailing lessons (levels 101, 103 and 104) are available aboard this yacht. Candidates must be at least 12 years of age or over to acquire bareboat certification.
