Beneteau Oceanis 35 - 2015

Sailboat Name: Knot Too Late

If looking for a great little bareboat that sails really well, offers a decent amount of space, good headroom, doesn't instantly induce claustrophobia, and won't break the bank ... you've just found it!

In keeping with Beneteau's design concept, this little sailboat features the same classic good looks that have made all her big sisters the darlings of the BVI yacht charter industry. She boasts the plumb bow, hard chines running all the way aft to her drop down swim platform, an immediately identifiable mainsheet arch, a large cockpit with dual helm stations and the same excellent sailing characteristics.

It comes as no surprise to me that the Oceanis 35 won the prestigious Cruising World "best Mid Sized Cruiser" award for 2015. Considering her size, she is exceptionally well laid out, spacious, nimble and easy to sail short handed.

The cockpit is a straight forward layout with centrally located double drop leaf table with drink well and molded drink holders. The ample bench seating comfortably accommodates 6 people.

Two Harken winches are located on the coach roof on either side of the companionway with the jib sheet winches and controls directly beside each helm. Compasses are located at both helms with the electronics, including a Brookes and Gatehouse multi-display and engine controls on the port side.

The drop down swim platform is pretty simple to deploy and is lowered to just above water level by a clever telescoping swim ladder. I love things that serve more than one purpose. :)

Her sail plan is nearly equal with 297 square foot main and 288 square foot genoa. Twin rudders will provide stability and excellent tracking at all points of sail.

This is the ideal sailboat for a romantic get away to the British Virgin Islands. She's perfect for 2 to 4 or for a young family with one or two children and even an additional guest. The open design concept is a breath of fresh air ... literally. I often find that two cabin yachts under about 36' can become a little too "closed in" for me. This is the first one of the few that hasn't made me want to turn around and head back to the cockpit for a little air. It's also the reason I don't sell anything under 33'. I simply can't sell that which I won't stay aboard myself.

On the Oceanis 35, the designers have done away with the forward interior bulkhead and opened the V-berth to the main salon. It gives one the feeling of tremendous spaciousness ... and I like that a lot.

The galley is small but workable with a single stainless steel sink, 2 burner stove and reasonable storage space. The dinette will easily seat 4 for dinner, though weather permitting, I would always choose to dine al fresco.

An aft facing navigation station is integrated at one end of the dinette on the port side, while the head with shower is on the starboard side.

The private aft cabin with oversized queen berth is located on the port side and offers a reasonable amount of storage space as well as a good sized hanging locker just outside the cabin and forward of the nav station.

On the starboard side, aft of the head you'll find an enormous storage space that is accessible from both the interior of the yacht and from the cockpit. No need to worry about bringing too much luggage, fishing equipment or water toys on this boat. There's plenty of room to store all of it!

In summary, I like it a lot and believe she is very deserving of the prestigious Cruising World "boat of the year award" for 2015 in the midsize cruiser division. Come to Tortola and sail this winner for yourself!
