Midtown Restaurant in Road Town on Tortola

Chief cook and bottle washer, Gloria Gumbs has seen many restaurants come and go ... but for more than 35 years, she has steadfastly remained in business and claims hers is THE best roti on Tortola. In all sincerity, I have to agree that her rotis are pretty darned good!

The breakfast menu includes standard American breakfast fare and several Caribbean dishes such as saltfish, fried fish, shellfish and sirloin or T-bone steak. There are lots of omeletts to choose from including one that I found intriguing ... roast beef and cheese omelett. Of course there are johnny cakes too!

The lunch and dinner menus (that are posted on the walls behind the bar) include burgers of all kinds including salmon burgers and vegi burgers, sandwiches, fries, chicken nuggets, conch fritters. There are also specials for lunch and dinner that change daily.

Gloria says that aside from the roti, her best selling dishes are boiled fish in mayonnaise sauce and her homemade pea soup. She also said one other dish was wildly popular, but because of the cost of the ingredients, I'm not supposed to mention it here. She is trying to source a less expensive supplier for her fabulous oxtail soup. Ooops ... sorry Gloria!
