The Crandall family have operated their little restaurant on Waterfront Drive, opposite the TMM charter base, on the west side of Road Town
since 1984. Nobody stays in business for 30 years or more if they don't serve good food. These days, Rosetta Samuels (nee Crandall) is the current manager handling the day to day operations ... and she is one busy lady!
The restaurant is almost always busy with a steady stream of people coming and going. Most folks order food for take out, but if you want to come for breakfast or lunch, they have a few tables to accommodate you and can seat a maximum of 8 to 10. They make a traditional breakfast, offering eggs and ham or if you wish, you can try some of their turkey too! Naturally, they have coffee and tea as well as lots of cold drinks.
Crandall's is famous for their West Indian patties. For the uninitiated, patties are pastry shells stuffed with ground beef, chicken, conch, shellfish, salt fish or veggies ... and they are delicious! They are the West Indian version of empanadas or Cornish pasties, designed to be eaten on the go. Just grab a few napkins and off you go.
In addition to the patties, they bake their own coconut, whole wheat coconut and white bread every day ... and of course, probably the best Johnny Cakes on the island. I swear their Johnny Cakes are going to be my undoing. I love them!
They serve up some fabulous chicken or conch rotis and fried chicken too. They also offer stewed mutton, stewed or curried chicken, stewed or steamed fish, BBQ Chicken, BBQ baby back ribs and a few other things I have forgotten. Oh ... they have home made soups too.
All of these things are made fresh daily on the premises in one of the smallest and busiest kitchens I have ever seen!
Crandall's are happy to provide catering as well if you have a special event at which you'd like to serve some authentic West Indian delights. Good luck calling them though if you want to place an order in advance. Every single time I have tried to call, the line was busy. You'll probably have better luck if you contact them through their website.
