Jost Van Dyke Information
.... and more about the British Virgin Islands:

Jost Van Dyke spacer Map of Jost Van Dyke | Pictures & Information

Origin of Name:

Dutch pirate who lived on the island in the 1700's

Location:

Approximately 5 miles west of Tortola.

Coordinates:

Dock in Great Harbour (Customs)
N18° 26 Hrs. 41 mins. - W64° 45 hrs. 01 mins.

Description:

Volcanic island with high hills and steep, winding roads. Currently, Jost Van Dyke is very sparsely residential but it is undergoing development of both its eastern and western extremes with plans for a marina village near Diamond Cay and private residences in the west above White Bay.

For the hiking enthusiast, you need only pick a road and start walking! This island is a hikers dream!

Population in 2006:

225 (estimate only - see note below)

Main Town or Village:

Great Harbour

Maximum elevation:

Majohnny Hill - 1,054' above sea level

Land Mass:

Approximately 4 square miles

Main industries:

Tourism and fishing (great lobster!)

Notable Beaches:

White Bay Beach is one of the best in the BVI! The other main beach is located in Great Harbour.

Though I wouldn't describe it as a beach persé, the Bubbly pool is certainly worth an honourable mention.

Overnight Anchorages:

Great Harbour, Little Harbour, Diamond Cay and White Bay. Note: White Bay can be quite unpleasant for overnight anchoring if the swells are up.

National Parks:

Diamond Cay

Major Annual Events:

Early March - Foxy's Music Fest
Late May - Foxy's Wooden Boat Regatta
September 1 to 3 - Jost Van Dyke Festival
October - Foxy's Cat Fight Regatta & Halloween Party
December 30 and 31 - Foxy's Old Year's Eve Party

Jost Van Dyke Marinas:

Little Harbour and Diamond Cay Marina (both are very small, providing fuel and water only)

Please Note: All population figures are estimates supplied by the British V.I. Development Planning Unit and are from a census taken in 1991. A new census was taken in 2001, but those figures are not yet available.

While coordinates for the British Virgin Islands supplied are as accurate as possible, they are not intended for navigational purposes.
